New Manila Tourist Attraction

Manila is one of the country's oldest cities and by old, we aren't referring to it's 500 year history.  By old, we mean OLD... as in worn out, debilitated, seedy, grimy, filthy... OLD.

Sure, there's much that can be done in terms of restoration and preservation.  Oh sure, we can listen to people like Paulo Alcazaren or Gerry Acuzar who are somewhat known for advocating the restoration and preservation of old buildings and houses.  But how much of that can you really take?

I mean, I love visiting places with some historical significance or other once in a while.  

But heck, I'm really more into eating at new restaurants, bars, theaters (I don't mean movie theaters but grand stages for the performing arts), dance halls, and such.

I crave newness and vibrancy more than getting acquainted with the musty, moldy facets of places like Ongpin, Quiapo, Malate, Escolta, Ermita, or Intramuros.

If you can stifle the urge vomit in your mouth after inhaling all the polluted air and inhaling the shit smelling mystery vapors from open storm drains... if you can resist the urge to shove and kick all the people away in these crowded areas... if you can stand the racket of all the effing jeeps, vendors hawking their wares, various establishments blaring out 'music' to attract attention, and other such sensory nuisances.

Really! Most of Manila is a layer of eyesore on another layer of eyesore and it seems no amount of cleaning up or fixing is going to get rid of all of its fugly features.  

What I want and NEED at this point is something new and shiny in Manila!  Problem is, there isn't anymore free space within the city.

Mon Tulfo Kicks Claudine Barretto, Figures in a Brawl with Raymart Santiago at NAIA Terminal 3

Raymart Santiago, Claudine Barretto, and Philippine Daily Inquirer Columnist Mon Tulfo figured in a three way brawl at the NAIA Terminal 3 Check In Counter.

In an interview, Claudine Barretto says Mon Tulfo physically assaulted her -- kicking her twice and shoving her hard against the counter.

Mon Tulfo, for his part, explains that he was in line at the passenger terminal when he notice a woman (Claudine) berating a terminal attendant of Cebu Pacific.  He says it was after he started taking pictures that he was attacked by Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barreto.

Claudine says that her children were with her when they figured in a fight with Mon Tulfo.

Santiago and Barretto says they are going to file charges against Tulfo.

Because De Lima Ignores the Rule of Law

In the coming days, Philippine Department of Justice Secretary Leila De Lima's ability or disability to see beyond the color yellow will be revealed.

According to Manila Blog Man, the lawyers of embattled realty magnate Delfin Lee, President of Globe Asiatique, filed at the Supreme Court "an ex-parte temporary restraining order (TRO) directing the Department of Justice (DOJ) to cease and desist from filing the syndicated estafa case against him and the other respondents."

Manila Blog Man's entry on whether the justice secretary will respect a TRO from the Supreme Court or not spells out the dilemma of De Lima:

The filing of the petition came after the Court of Appeals 17th Division on Monday gave the DOJ the go signal to file syndicated estafa case against Lee and several others in connection with the case of the Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF) against Globe Asiatique. 

The lawyers of Lee questioned the CA move on pure questions of law, arguing that the decision setting aside the injunction issued by Judge Rolando Mislang of Pasig Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 167 violated settled jurisprudence and basic constitutional rights of Lee. 

With the CA decision and the appeal of Lee to the High Court, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima is put to test on whether she will contradict herself by filing the information in court, who declared in earlier cases that an order or decision against which a motion for reconsideration or appeal is filed is not yet executory.

The post likewise points out other instances where De Lima wobbled in justifying her actions. In one instance, she single-handedly denied Former President Gloria Arroyo her constitutional right to travel even though she had not been formally charged in court for violating any law.  In another instance, putting herself above the Judicial Branch of Government, she pushes for the arrest of Senator Panfilo Lacson.

It will be recalled that when the SC on Nov. 15, 2011 issued a TRO on the inclusion of former President Arroyo and husband Mike Arroyo in the immigration watch list, which, in effect, allowed them to go abroad, De Lima said the TRO was not yet final and executory until after the government motion for reconsideration had been filed and denied by the SC. 

In the case of Sen. Panfilo Lacson, De Lima has said that the arrest warrant against the senator remained in effect even if the Court of Appeals had voided it because of the options still given to the government then, including appealing the CA decision.

Does De Lima really have the capacity to go beyond brown-nosing the President and follow the rule of law?
